Snowmobile Season Is Upon Us

Updated: Nov 11, 2020

Under the Off Road Vehicle Act, every all terrain vehicle must be registered in BC. In my experience, there seems to be some confusion with riders in regards to the type of coverage needed in order to operate their vehicles in compliance with the laws.

What coverage am I required to have, and what is optional?

The answer to this depends on what you are using your vehicle for. Here is a breakdown of the coverages available. Remember, the only thing you legally require is your registration.

ICBC Liability

Basic $200,000 liability is required when you cross highways and when loading and unloading in public parking lots.

You have the option to purchase more than the basic for an additional premium.

Liability is purchased on an annual basis and proof of coverage is in the form of a annual decal which you affix to your off road license plate.

Again, this coverage is not a legal requirement unless you are CROSSING A HIGHWAY or accessing PUBLIC PARKING LOTS with your off road vehicle.

Off Road Liability

You only require off road liability when you are operating your vehicles on Forest Service Roads. You can purchase the basic $200,000 to a maximum of $5 million depending on your insurer. Off Road Liability is only sold though a private carrier, and is fairly inexpensive, approximately $100 annually.

While this coverage is optional, penalties for not having proper liability could result in fines up to a maximum of $2,000, and seizure of your vehicle by a peace officer.

You do not require liability when operating on crown land or private land. Sometimes roads and trails look like crown land, but could be categorized as forest service roads. It is recommended to contact your local districts to find out if the road or tail you are planning on using is deemed a forest service road or not.

Replacement Cost

All terrain vehicles are dangerous by nature. However, snowmobiles are much more so. The chance of loss is also greater in the winter as there are more imposed risks, such as slippery terrain and avalanches. Off road vehicles can be quite expensive, and just like you car, you want to ensure your investment is covered, especially if you are financing. Replacement cost and Agreed Value coverage are available for an additional premium on an annual basis. While this coverage is optional it is highly recommended, especially for newer units.

Kootenay Agencies offers this coverage. Let us know if you would like a quote.
